Can you trust your repairer?

It's not uncommon for some devices to have a propensity towards getting damaged. Some devices just seem to feel the effects of gravity more than others. So, it's also not uncommon, as a repairer, to fix a device that has been to another repairer before.

Time and time again, I see phones and tablets, that were supposed to be returned to their owners in the best possible condition, returned in a sub-par state. Granted, there are some more extreme damages that have limited repair options.  I am talking about the ones where the repairer has accidentally damaged a component themselves, and then simply covered it up.

Here is an example of what I mean:

This is a Wifi antenna for an iPad 2. The bottom one is an example of a good antenna (the red and blue bits are protective films that get removed when installed). The top one is the antenna taken out of the customers iPad which had been previously repaired at a different repairers where it's clearly been torn right in half!

The Wifi antenna has adhesive on both sides, so it is easy enough to tear the antenna when removing the glass. The right thing to do, as a repairer, is replace the now damaged component. The wrong thing to do is to reassemble the iPad, leaving the customer with reduced performance, and not say anything. (The best thing is to just remove the glass with more care and not break stuff!)

It's only when the device is taken to another repairer that the issue is discovered, all the while the customer was thinking it was his own fault, for initially damaging the iPad, that the Wifi reception wasn't working as it should.

At Techrevive, we are absolutely committed to the highest quality repair jobs and the utmost honesty. We also have a policy that all repairs must aim for as close to 100% brand new as possible. Our technicians are not happy unless we have done absolutely everything to reach this goal.

Here is a picture of the Wifi antenna, properly replaced like it should have been in our customers iPad. Proper function has now been restored.

It's actually shocking how many times we have discovered devices not repaired properly. Here is another example:

Tempered Glass Screen Protector

We've all done it. We have all made an attempt at putting that cheap, flimsy screen protector onto our phone screens. It's no secret that the cheaper the screen protector, the worse the result. Not to mention the long term results. How much protection is that tiny layer of plastic film really providing? It's safe to assume that a good solid gouge would go right through the plastic to the glass underneath.

I recently found out about these tempered glass screen protectors. I was curious and decided to order one for my Sony Z1. I was pretty tired of how many fingerprints were left on my screen (something Xperia owners would sympathise with). This screen protector promised 10H rating for scratch resistance, super easy application, crystal clear image and of course, finger print resistance. Sounds good right?

I got my screen protector in the mail a few days later and eagerly went about applying it to my phone. I've applied a lot of screen protectors over the years, having worked in phone repairs and at a phone shop. This was, by a very wide margin, the easiest and cleanest application I have ever experienced! Super easy application? CHECK!

What I was astonished at was just how unobtrusive the screen was to the underlying image. I could barely tell it was there and would venture as far as saying the image seems even better! Crystal clear image? CHECK!

A few swipes around the screen and after a few games the marks and residue from my fingerprints was significantly less than without the screen protector. A lot less! This is likely why I found the image so good! Now having had the screen protector for several weeks, I can safely say I don't know how I managed without it. Finger print resistant? CHECK!

And finally, the hardness of the glass means that putting a scratch into one of these is exceptionally difficult. I have yet to put a scratch in mine. Scratch resistant? CHECK!

iPad Repair and a Consumer's Choice

A lot of people crack their iPad screens. It's not really a difficult thing to do. Usually the impact is immediately followed by a colourful superlative, then clenched teeth and sucking air. Once composure is regained, thoughts will typically move to repairs. This is where your local repair shop comes in. A quick Google search will usually result in several locations offering the service. This can range from some dude's garage to fully fledged labs with all the required equipment.

But be warned! Not all iPad repairs are the same!

I have done a lot of iPad repairs. Literally in the hundreds. I am no stranger to the various qualities and attributes of replacement screens. The real difference in the quality of a repair comes from what adhesive is used for the repair.

If you have ever had your iPad repaired, most likely you've noticed that it doesn't quite feel the same. Granted there's not much to be done aesthetically for dented corners on the frame, but the screen itself just doesn't seem to fit right. You can usually press down on the screen close to the edges and feel it moving around, or you get a sound like it's sticking and un-sticking to the metal. This is because the adhesive that is mostly used for repairs is a cheap double sided tape, cut to fit the frame. But it was never designed to stick to glass and metal with the ferocity of the original adhesive Apple uses.

I am very well versed in this adhesive, having had used it on many repairs. Never feeling quite comfortable with the quality, I knew that there must be something better. That's when I discovered that Apple actually makes original adhesive kits for iPad repairs! This is known as OEM or "Original Equipment Manufacturer". OEM does infer that it's a third party selling the kits, but indeed made originally by Apple.

The first time I used this adhesive, I was shocked at how good the iPad not only looked, but felt after the repair. It felt brand new! I couldn't find any places where the screen appeared to lift or didn't have a less than perfect grip on the frame.

I was so pleased with this result that we stocked up heavily in the adhesive and discarded all of the substandard types. We use it in almost every repair that requires adhesive (of which there is a lot!) and have been exceptionally pleased (and so have our customers)!

We want nothing but the best for our customers and so we invest in better materials, and really take the time to get devices looking, feeling and operating as close to perfect as is possible.

And we succeed in doing so.
